How It Works

K-Line is designed to fit any size or shape field and a variety of crops and situations. For smaller projects, less than 4-5 acres, many of our dealerships have preconstructed three, four, and five-pod Farm Packs available. For larger situations, our dealerships and on-staff designers will work together to construct a customized design and materials list.

Various factors impact the number of required "sets" and the appropriate irrigation interval on each piece of property. Some of these factors include environment/geographic location, evapotranspiration rate, terrain, soil type, and crop. For assistance with optimizing the design of your K-Line irrigation project, as well as choosing the correct sprinkler type, nozzle size, and determining the proper diameter and length of K-Pipe, please fill out our Consultation Request Form. Our expert designers will construct a design and materials list specific to your property and situation.

Every property and every irrigation situation is unique. However, there are standard features to consider when evaluating every situation to ensure your crops receive the right amount of supplemental water, at the right time, without over-irrigating and wasting valuable time, energy, and water. Some of these factors include...

   - Size & Shape of Irrigated Parcel

   - Geographic Location / Environment

   - Crop

   - Evapotranspiration (ET) Rate (combination of simultaneous evaporation and transpiration from a field)

   - Soil Moisture Holding Capacity

   - Land Topography

Previous

Using the information collected from Step 1, the parcel will be broken up into irrigation zones (or sections). Small fields of less than 2-3 acres may only require one zone. Larger parcels will have multiple zones with each zone served by one K-Line pod line, a feedline, and a riser (preferably in the middle of each zone). Where practical, areas of similar size/shape, topography, and soil type should remain in the same zone to maximize irrigation efficiency, labor, and water infiltration.

Once a layout has been decided upon by the landowner/manager, line specifics and componentry can be identified to create a K-Line materials list. Necessary considerations include individual line lengths, sprinkler and pod counts, sprinkler type, and proper irrigation application rates which influence sprinkler nozzle sizing. One of the most significant factors to identify will be proper K-Pipe sizing (1.25", 1.5", or 1.75" in most cases) to ensure proper pressure and flow will be maintained to the most distant line & pod from the water source.

Most K-Line dealership locations are able to offer advice and pricing for underground piping and pump requirements, specific to each system. Many dealerships also offer installation services for these elements.

K-Line was designed with the express goal of simplicity. Nearly anyone, armed with basic hand tools, can install K-Line. However, if you prefer, most of our dealers will install your K-Line system, and often the underground components, for you.

Visit the Installation page for more information. Our detailed videos and brochures are sure to help you complete this step if you go it alone.

Now that your K-Line system is installed, you're ready for the best part - using it!

Every 12 or 24 hours, as was decided in the design, each K-line will need to be moved to its consecutive set (placing within each zone). A lawn tractor, ATV, (or even a horse!) can be used to move K-Lines from one set to the next. For larger parcels, where long lines are used, markers set at the far ends of each set can help with assuring correct line placement and reducing missed dry spots in the field. Lines should be moved while water is running through them to help provide rigidity to the K-Pipe, further preventing line kinks.

None of the following accessory items are required for regular K-Line use, however, they are often quite handy for reducing labor, and improving K-Line longevity.

Kwik-Shifter ATV Dolly: Help snag and tow each K-Line. Turn corners sharper and faster. Extend the driver further away from the front sprinkler.

Karousel: Set in corners or in front of plant rows such as orchards or vineyards where you want to protect plants and/or K-Line components from damaging each other. There are two sizes available for regular and mid-size pods.

K-Line Product FAQs
What is the minimum amount of pressure required to operate sprinklers?

The last sprinkler in the pod line will need to be supplied with at least 35 PSI (although some systems can work with slightly less pressure). The amount of pressure required at the supply pump(s) depends upon the size, type, and length of both underground and aboveground pipe, possibly including the rise in terrain that must be overcome. Your K-Line dealer will be able to help you figure out proper pump sizing.

How much water supply is necessary to operate a K-Line system?

In an ideal situation, the application rate, which is dependent upon crop type, soil moisture-holding capacity, shift frequency, and evapotranspiration rate, determines the supply rate. We have various sprinklers and nozzles available that can apply anywhere from 2 - 5+ GPM. Multiplying the number of sprinklers by the desired application rate determines the total water supply requirements for a piece of property.

A general rule of thumb to follow is that you need 3 GPM, per inch, per week, per irrigated acre.

Example: If you want to apply 1.5" per week to a three-acre parcel...

3 GPM x 1.5" x 1 week x 3 acres = 13.5 GPM

Can K-Line really irrigate ANY piece of property?

K-Line was designed to be the most flexible, cost-effective, efficient irrigation system on the market. If the piece of property in question can be accessed by an ATV, it can be irrigated with K-Line. Additionally, K-Line’s unique combination of flexibility and durability allows it to be towed across rough terrain, manipulated without having to remove or augment existing objects (trees, fences, waterways, etc.), and designed for use in odd-shaped areas.

How long will K-Line systems last?

Considering normal use, K-Line tubing and pods are expected to last at least ten years. However, there are many systems in the United States and abroad that we are aware of that are 20+ years old and have required little to no maintenance requirements outside of occasionally splicing a pipe crack after multiple kinks in the same spot.

What are the maintenance requirements of K-Line?

"Simplicity" was the word in mind while going through the design process of inventing K-Line. Not only is it easy to operate, nearly anyone can repair it (which is rarely even necessary). The only regular maintenance requirements are: draining at season's end, unplugging the occasionally clogged sprinkler nozzle, and splicing the rare break in lines if/when kinked multiple times over.

I have multiple areas needing supplemental irrigation. Can I transport K-Lines between these areas?

This can usually be done. It works best when pieces of property needing irrigation are of similar shape and/or size.

I’m looking for an irrigation solution for rented property. Is K-Line a good option?

Absolutely! K-Line’s transportability means that it can easily be picked up and moved or stored. It’s always yours and can be moved onto a new piece of property in the future if need be. Furthermore, if underground supply lines are not dug in such a way to get a riser to the center of each zone, additional K-Line or flexible lay-flat water hose (fire hose) can be extended from the water source to the center of each zone, creating a temporary riser.

What can I do to reduce the drift of regular impact sprinklers experienced in windy areas?

We carry various sprinklers that help combat this very situation. Furthermore, designs can be made to account for this, and spacing between sprinklers/pods adjusted to mitigate drift.

I want to irrigate an area that may have livestock in it at the same time. Will this be an issue with K-Line?

No. We have “stock guards” available to place over the top of pods which ensures that livestock hoof action will not break sprinklers or fittings and does not hinder water application.

If the K-Pipe becomes kinked, will it ruin the tubing?

No. K-pipe must become kinked in the same place multiple times before it creates a leak or splits open. Even if this happens, our fittings can be used to splice the two sections back together.

Can I fertigate with a K-Line system?

Yes. You can run fertilizers and other crop chemicals through K-Line just as you would with any other form of irrigation. Furthermore, the true value of fertigating with K-Line is that a field can be micromanaged. With other forms of mainstream irrigation, the only option is to blanket a field with an average amount of chemical. With K-Line, select areas can be pre-wetted with water before or after chemical application and the operator can choose to add more, less, or no chemical to certain areas of a field vs. others. This is just one example of the management flexibility and environmental stewardship benefits that K-Line offers that other irrigation options can’t.

Can I "test" K-Line on a small portion of a larger field before designing the entire field with it?

Absolutely! However, you will want to consider sizing the underground supply pipe (and possibly the pump) to be of adequate size if/when the entire area is irrigated.

Can I automate when my K-Line system is running?

Yes. By combining some components of our G-Set product with K-Line it is possible to automate when pod lines are on or off.
